Fairtrade Fortnight

This year’s Fairtrade Fortnight was a real success in Hillpark. The Young Co-operative launched this with a trip to the Fair Trade Conference. Bora Krasniqi, Faizah Mohammed, Aminah Tahir, Nivetha Mohanarajah, Antonia Katula and Elle McPherson addressed a rapt audience in a packed Banqueting Hall about Hillpark’s Fairtrade Journey over the years. They also showed a film of our activities accompanied by a live performance by our former Young Co-operator, Aidan Smith, At the end, we were presented with a special edition Fair Trade Football and challenged to use this during Fairtrade Fortnight in a school event.

At the conference, pupils met Pamela l’Intelligent, a textile worker from Mauritius whose life has been transformed by working for a Fairtrade company. Pamela came to Hillpark Secondary on the afternoon of Friday 27th to speak to our pupils.

Earlier that day, the Young Co-op attended a debate in the Science Centre on Fair Trade for the Milan Expo: 2015  with Humza Yousuf, Scottish Minister for International Development and representatives from the Italian Consulate and the Scottish Fair Trade Forum . Our pupils met and chatted with Humza Yousuf and later contributed the views and ideas of young people to the debate.
