S4;     N4     N5

National 4 Mathematics

In Mathematics, S4 pupils work at a level appropriate to their ability. Pupils in all sections continue to build upon their prior knowledge and understanding.

By studying the National 4 Mathematics course, pupils develop a range of mathematical, operational and reasoning skills that can be used to solve mathematical and real-life problems. There are three main units – Expressions and Formulae, Relationships and Numeracy. These are assessed internally during S4.

Pupils also sit an internal exam at the end of S4 – the Added Value Unit.

To gain the National 4 Mathematics award, pupils must pass all three Units and the final assessment.

National 5 Mathematics

In Mathematics, S4 pupils work at a level appropriate to their ability. Pupils in all sections continue to build upon their prior knowledge and understanding.

By studying the National 5 Mathematics course, pupils develop a range of mathematical, operational and reasoning skills that can be used to solve mathematical and real-life problems. There are three main units – Expressions and Formulae, Relationships and Applications. These are assessed internally during S4.

Pupils may also be presented for an external exam at the end of S4.

Higher Mathematics

The new Higher Mathematics course extends the mathematical skills previously acquired in National 5 Mathematics.

The course continues to build concepts and skills within the broad content areas of Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry, as well as introducing the pupils to Calculus.

The Higher Mathematics course contains three units of work, which are covered sequentially. Pupils are assessed throughout the course to ensure that they have achieved basic competency.

Pupils will be presented for an external exam at the end of S5/6.
